{"id":48,"date":"2011-06-05T15:15:56","date_gmt":"2011-06-05T19:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/?page_id=48"},"modified":"2025-04-23T14:27:46","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T18:27:46","slug":"1984-simple-gifts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/?page_id=48","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 3: Riffs Of Nostalgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Our \u201cCamelot\u201d<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7862\" title=\"Me at 4\" src=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/me-at-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/me-at-4.jpg 530w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/me-at-4-263x300.jpg 263w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/me-at-4-526x600.jpg 526w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>I affectionately refer to early childhood as our \u201cCamelot.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It was a pleasant blur of playing, visiting relatives in the Newark area, going to drive-in movies, family parties at our house, day trips to Keansburg, Johnson Park, and Turtleback Zoo, and going down the shore at Long Branch, where family owns property.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;d grab a hot dog at Max\u2019s on the boardwalk, and go on the rides at the amusement pier, &#8220;Kids&#8217; World&#8221; (which unfortunately burned down in 1987. We stayed at the famed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontainebleau.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fontainebleau Hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontainebleau.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9796\" src=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fontainebleau.jpg\" alt=\"fontainebleau\" width=\"994\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fontainebleau.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fontainebleau-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/fontainebleau-600x319.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most of my memories from that trip come from the movies of the beach, pool, aquarium, and other sights along the way. They captured a delightful time for me.<\/p>\n<p>I remember a photo of Mom pointing to a door to a room that was said to have been Frank Sinatra&#8217;s favorite suite.<\/p>\n<p>From the June 7, 2012 Huffington Post (penned by Levi Forte, known by some as &#8220;The Battling Bellman&#8221;, a former professional boxer and an employee of the Fontainebleau Miami Beach):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cIn its heyday, the Fontainebleau was the place to be. Movie stars and musicians occupied every corner of the hotel. Muhammad Ali stayed here and I worked directly with Frank Sinatra whenever he visited. Years after our fight, I ran into Mr. Foreman, who was staying at the Fontainebleau with his youngest son. He proclaimed once again he would never give me that rematch.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I do recall getting carsick once on that trip.\u00a0We were eating at a diner and I must have looked green because Dad picked me up QB-style and tried to hustle out the door before I blew.\u00a0Well &#8230; at least he <em>tried<\/em>. The outfit, which Mom made to match hers, is also pictured at the top of this page.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mom later told me that I was so well-behaved at dinner on that trip, other patrons approached to compliment us on it.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0always trained me to &#8220;act like a lady&#8221; when we were out, and to mind my manners, and I did.<\/p>\n<p>Mom and Dad also brought me to Radio City Music Hall&#8217;s Christmas Spectacular, featuring the Rockettes, while Steven was with relatives. I was old enough to really enjoy some of these special day trips.<\/p>\n<p>Other excursions included Ringling Brothers&#8217; 100th Anniversary at Madison Square Garden in May 1970 via the &#8220;Penn Central&#8221; line at that time.<\/p>\n<p>As a family, we went down the shore to Mr. Scuorzo&#8217;s bungalow around Barnegat a few times.\u00a0I have a specific memory of getting into our pajamas for the ride home in the Caddy Sedan DeVille. <em>Last Night I Didn&#8217;t Get to Sleep At All<\/em> by The 5th Dimension was playing on the car stereo.<\/p>\n<p>We visited the kiddie rides at Keansburg and Asbury Park many times.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/musicnotes-tiny.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-9464 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/musicnotes-tiny.gif\" alt=\"musicnotes-tiny\" width=\"50\" height=\"61\" \/><\/a>Proud Mary<\/strong><br \/>\nCreedence Clearwater Revival<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"mbmaplayer_1375798763952\" class=\"{skin:&#039;black&#039;, animate:false, width:&#039;120&#039;, volume:0.2, autoplay:false, loop:false, showVolumeLevel:true, showTime:true, showRew:true, downloadable:false, downloadablesecurity:false, id3: false}\" href=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Creedence-Clearwater-Revival-Proud-Mary.mp3\">Creedence Clearwater Revival &#8211; Proud Mary<\/a><textarea class=\"map_params\" style=\"display: block; padding: 3px; background: #444; color: #fff; text-decoration: none;\" disabled=\"disabled\">map :: {skin:&#8217;black&#8217;, animate:false, width:&#8217;120&#8242;, volume:0.2, autoplay:false, loop:false, showVolumeLevel:true, showTime:true, showRew:true, downloadable:false, downloadablesecurity:false, id3: false}<\/textarea><\/p>\n<p>Nostalgic music from early childhood includes Aretha Franklin\u2019s <em>Until You Come Back To Me,<\/em> Al Wilson\u2019s <em>Show and Tell<\/em>, Billy Preston\u2019s <em>Nothing from Nothing<\/em>, Carole King\u2019s <em>It\u2019s Too Late\/I Feel The Earth Move<\/em>, Chicago\u2019s <em>25 or 6-to-4,<\/em> Freda Payne\u2019s <em>Band of Gold,<\/em> Carly Simon\u2019s <em>You\u2019re So Vain<\/em>, Gilbert O\u2019 Sullivan\u2019s <em>Alone Again, Naturally<\/em>, Ringo Starr\u2019s <em>Photograph<\/em>, Jackson 5\u2019s <em>Never Can Say Goodbye<\/em>, and pretty much anything Carpenters or Bread.<\/p>\n<h3>A Nostalgic Soundtrack Through Television<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/?page_id=14556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV also provided an aural backdrop<\/a> to my early years.\u00a0The ethereal, symphonic-with-a Hollywood-flourish station movie promo snippets included <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OuOsyzfKiVk&amp;feature=related\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC Sunday Night Movie<\/a> \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rM-Vkd7On2Q?rel=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Movie of the Week<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eE6CTjSwH9I?rel=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABC 4:30 Movie<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5PouPaKlXGI?rel=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WOR Saturday Movie<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(the latter used well into the &#8217;80s) among countless others.<\/p>\n<p>These were\u00a0 the strains of popular TV and movie themes as we went about our lives.\u00a0These movie bumpers are so reminiscent of what it was like just being alive in the &#8217;70s; especially as a kid. They had a certain flair that can&#8217;t be described.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rM-Vkd7On2Q?rel=0\" width=\"900\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe original composition for &#8220;WOR Saturday Movie&#8221; by Neil Richardson remains a favorite of mine.<\/p>\n<p>The string-heavy, percussive John Williams-esque intro for New York&#8217;s ABC 6 PM \u201cEyewitness News\u201d sounded as its evening anchor began the broadcast: \u201cI\u2019m Roger Grimsby \u2026 hear now the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mellow, playful <em>Mary Tyler Moore<\/em>\u00a0and hip, folksy <em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/xZzEzDkeHzI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Welcome Back Kotter<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>intros were an accompaniment to our after-school hours.\u00a0The whistling <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zaWuXHMrwXo?rel=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NBC Mystery Movie<\/a><\/em>\u00a0theme resonated downstairs as we said our prayers before bed, as well as the edgy <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1WqazleR3FE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sanford and Son<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and quaint (from Television City in Hollywood!) <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oV5LQcmuGg8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">All in the Family<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1131\" style=\"width: 335px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1131\" title=\"Papa, Dad and Grandmommy at Presto's Tavern\" src=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/papa-dad-gmommy-prestos-tav-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"Papa, Dad and Grandmommy at Presto's Tavern\" width=\"335\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/papa-dad-gmommy-prestos-tav-297x300.jpg 297w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/papa-dad-gmommy-prestos-tav-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/papa-dad-gmommy-prestos-tav.jpg 532w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Papa, Dad and Grandmommy at Presto&#8217;s Tavern, where Mom and Dad spent many early days of courtship<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For many years, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=keiuXB3dJ0E?rel=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the jazzy riffs of Doc Severinsen\u2019s band<\/a> sounded late at night. Mom settled in for some Pepsi and Wise Potato Chips, for her date with Johnny Carson, her refuge in clever comedy to top off a long day.\u00a0Once tucked in for the night, I knew better than to get out of bed for anything less than profuse bleeding, barfing or the smell of smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Mom taught us our prayers, the <em>Apostles\u2019 Creed<\/em>, <em>John 3:16<\/em>, the <em>Pledge of Allegiance<\/em>, the<em> Doxology<\/em> and many other songs.\u00a0She had me sing and recite these things at age 3, <a title=\"Media\" href=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/?page_id=1842\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">captured on audio tape.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She also read stories before bed. I recall sitting with Steven in his crib while she read from the <em>Berenstain Bears<\/em> and <em>Uncle Wiggily<\/em> series. I liked the character &#8220;Skeezix.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One summer evening in late June 1972, I was in bed and it was after dark. It amounted to just a fearsome flaming glow where we were. The Gary Glitter song <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aaMYyXGDzSQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rock and Roll<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(Part One) always reminded me of that view and how scary it seemed.<\/p>\n<h3>Starting Kindergarten<\/h3>\n<p>By the spring of 1971, it was time to register the next class of students to enter school. My birthday was after the October 31 cutoff, but Mom had me tested for early admission.\u00a0I apparently aced the Comprehension and Skills exams with ease.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5423\" style=\"width: 909px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5423 \" title=\"Nana with us, at our house one Easter. Mickey Mouse was my primary subject.<\/p>\n<p>I also began Sunday school at Trinity Presbyterian Church on Cranbury Road that year. My teacher, Miss Larsen, later told me of my wanting to baptize a baby during church one Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d seen it done and thought I could do it as well as Reverend Miller. Imagine my consternation at being unable to realize this ambition.<\/p>\n<p>Another time, we were learning about how God created the light. I repeatedly insisted that <em>Thomas Edison<\/em>, not God, created the light!\u00a0I was not to be contradicted. (Thankfully, I have since gained the wisdom acknowledging God\u2019s rightful place in the history of Creation.)<\/p>\n<p>When I came home after kindergarten each day, Mom would have a nourishing lunch ready for me, and we would spend the afternoon doing fun and educational things.\u00a0This included trips to the Library, errands, perhaps a walk up to Somerset Farms convenience store or Jim Gall the butcher.\u00a0Strolls were pleasant as Mom pointed out different birds or trees (there was a Mimosa tree along the way), and sing as I walked and she wheeled Steven.<\/p>\n<p>We would also visit one of Mom\u2019s friends, Mrs. Burnham in South River.\u00a0I recall touching Mrs. Burnham&#8217;s hot iron once after being explicitly warned. It had picture books and a pretty fish tank.<\/p>\n<p>Around that time, Mom bought a membership to the East Brunswick Community Pool (aka Dallenbach&#8217;s), on Dunhams Corner Road (now Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center).<\/p>\n<p>Back then, it was no more than a picturesque sandy beach by a lake, with a snack bar, cabanas and play equipment for kids.\u00a0For years, Mom took us there to spend many a sultry summer day.<\/p>\n<p>I recall getting a chocolate Italian ice treat with money Mom gave me, the\u00a0 sandy floor of the restroom, and the happy screams and chill vibe on the beach. The big kids were allowed on the other side of the fence and could swim out to the big raft. I wouldn&#8217;t do that until I was 12. They were some great memories.<\/p>\n<h3>Franklin<\/h3>\n<p>I had a favorite stuffed toy named Franklin. He was a bunny I got for Easter one year, and I carried him everywhere. Whenever I made him &#8220;talk&#8221;, it came out as a high-pitched &#8220;hmmm hmmmm&#8221; noise through my nose. I guess he never truly verbalized his thoughts, but the noise eventually drove Mom up the wall. Grandmommy and Papa had originally lived in West Orange. Papa worked for <a title=\"Chicago Bridge &amp; Iron Company\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Bridge_%26_Iron_Company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago Bridge &amp; Iron<\/a> and was transferred a couple of times. First, they lived in Argentina.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, they moved to New Castle, and by the time I was born, they&#8217;d already been there a couple of years. One time, on the trip down, Steven threw up on his red corduroy coat on the way down, and I was envious that night when he got to have tapioca but I didn\u2019t!<\/p>\n<p>Grandmommy also had a wonderful hill in the back of her brick house, and I perfected rolling down it when I was a toddler.\u00a0Steve eventually learned how, and we would do this for hours. Had to smell for myself, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>Another time, she brought me to visit a friend of hers who had a pet gerbil. I declared that it was a mouse, and no one could convince me otherwise. Stubborn little bugger, I&#8217;ll admit.<\/p>\n<p>When Mom was teaching me not to swallow toothpaste at three years old, she warned me not to do it, lest I lose my hair like Papa.
