We now knew that I <strong><em>would <\/em><\/strong>be one of the lucky few playing to that mammoth three-story press box.<\/p>\n<p>I was about to make many memories in that stadium, and would return for years as a part of the 350+ WVU Alumni Band with my husband.<\/p>\n<p>I also met my future roommate, sweet, blond and soft-spoken Lisa L, from Shinnston, WV.\u00a0We got acquainted, talked about what college would be like, and arranged for a mini-refrigerator for our dorm room. I walked over and struck up a conversation with them, and spoke mostly to the guy with straight brown hair and a mustache.<\/p>\n<p>I showed him my new snare drum pendant I\u2019d gotten at my grad party.\u00a0When it was time for my student ID picture, we said goodbye and see you at band camp.<\/p>\n<p>Little did I know that following my departure, straight brown hair\/mustache guy turned to his friend.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6537\" style=\"width: 335px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6537\" title=\"My WVU ID Card\" src=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/wv-ID2.jpg\" alt=\"My WVU ID Card\" width=\"335\" height=\"568\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My WVU ID Card, taken just moments after meeting the nice guy with the straight brown hair<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He declared, \u201cI\u2019m gonna take that girl out,\u201d to which the friend (later known as Bob R) snickered.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>But John would not easily be discouraged.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I also met a bunch of fellow freshman music majors at the orientation and we palled around together for a few hours, and we decided to blow off the freshman mixer in favor of grabbing a pizza at Mario\u2019s on University Avenue, near Towers.<\/p>\n<p>Cool as always, Mom made herself scarce for the time being, and we planned to meet toward evening.<\/p>\n<p>On the last night of our two-day trip, Mom and I had a nice dinner at Shoney\u2019s next to the Coliseum Motel.<\/p>\n<p>We shared a brownie ice cream sundae and talked about the future. She was so excited for me, and I remember feeling nervous but relieved to have met some of my future classmates. We talked about my dreams, my hopes, and how I felt about the new chapter waiting.<\/p>\n<p>I was mere weeks from a new life of collegiate independence. On the brink of such change, I realized I was going to really miss my mother. The days of regularly hanging out together watching TV mini-series or going out to the movies and the like were dwindling.<\/p>\n<p>Her health would eventually deteriorate, and we both knew it. Things would never be the same. This was a completely different ball game from being a student.<\/p>\n<p>I left Saturday with the East Brunswick crowd gathered at the Simons\u2019 house, carpooling down to Glassboro State. We would be assigned our floors and co-counselors, and tasks for that week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5459\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5459\" style=\"width: 990px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5459\" title=\"ASTA staff\" src=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ASTA.jpg\" alt=\"ASTA staff\" width=\"990\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ASTA.jpg 604w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ASTA-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/adrummergirlslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/ASTA-600x388.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ASTA staff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a counselor, I had new responsibilities.\u00a0These included rotating desk duty, supervising events, providing support during rehearsals, escorting kids back to the dorm, and coaching a chamber music group for Thursday\u2019s recital.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday evening was busy with making signs for the students\u2019 doors, unpacking into our own rooms and getting acclimated.\u00a0The students arrived with their parents the next day and it was instant bedlam.\u00a0I handled the confusion well, meeting the parents of the girls on my floor and holding a meeting that evening to go over the <em>Dos and Don\u2019ts<\/em> and other important matters.<\/p>\n<p>Leading an intermediate chamber music group was a completely new experience, and a little intimidating. I was assigned a \u201cco-coach\u201d who seemed hesitant about what to do, so I took over most of the rehearsals. I was in a couple of skits, singing and doing some slapstick stuff \u2026 a crazy good time.<\/p>\n<p>I got to be good friends with \u201cJoey D\u201d for the next several ASTAs. The eligible S brothers were \u201cdown\u201d one; Joe married that year.<\/p>\n<p>I got along very well with the girls on my floor; the 11-year-old \u201cringleader\u201d Jen even started a little \u201cfan club\u201d for me. Attempting to maintain a long-distance thing would probably be trying at best.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had already been scorched by a previous girl who left for college at Villanova and promptly found someone else. I didn&#8217;t blame him for protecting his heart.<\/p>\n<p>His increased involvement with Chatter and their jam-packed schedule provided a convenient reason for his inability to see me as often.<\/p>\n<p>As August wore on, I really missed Mark, and did a lot of writing in the ME Book. However, it made no sense to idly sit waiting for his call. (Substitute &#8220;iPod&#8221; with &#8220;Walkman&#8221;)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One morning in August, I went downstairs into the kitchen to find a cute young plumber crouched under the sink.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin introduced himself to me, and we started a conversation.<\/p>\n<p>We ended up going out that night to the movies and saw Purple Rain at the Amboys Multiplex on Route 9.<\/p>\n<p>We grabbed a Dunkin\u2019 Donuts afterward. Kevin was also in the pit crew for a local stock car driver, and I went with him to some racetrack to see him get all greasy.<\/p>\n<p>He took me out in his jacked-up Chevelle to the KMart lot so I could get the feel for driving stick. That car was a jewel.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin was a nice guy, but the relationship was casual. I would be leaving for college within a matter of days.<\/p>\n<p>Though Mark was no longer as accessible as in recent months, he sent me a couple of postcards from his travels with Chatter and occasionally called. Our relationship was undoubtedly cooling.<\/p>\n<p>Mark came over one night and we took a walk. Afterward, we lay down and made out on the side lawn in the shadows, and had a final passionate good-bye in front his car.
